I meant to post these screen captures...I don't think they're too spoilery...

Also, I forgot to mention David Marciano, who early in his career appeared in an episode of China Beach, was a regular on Civil Wars, and co-starred on Due South, one of my personal favorite series.

I'm really digging the new show ENLIGHTENED on HBO.
It stars Laura Dern, Luke Wilson, Timm Sharp (of "Undeclared"), and Mike White, who is the creator/writer/director (and was also the guy behind "School of Rock", one of the guys behind "Freaks & Geeks", some other stuff...)

The premise is kind of hard to pin down into a short summary (see the trailer for that). It's strange and whimsical, but also kind of dark and very dryly funny. Visually and musically, it's gorgeous. And Laura Dern is great.

There've been 2 episodes so far, and it's on Mondays at 9:30/8:30c. According to the ratings, hardly anyone is watching it. So if you have HBO, give it a shot. It's good!

Boardwalk Empire is dullsville for me. I don't connect with any of the characters. 75% of the screentime is devoted to white dudes talking business. It's like the writers thought the boring mafia "let's talk shop" scenes from the Sopranos were the best part of that show (hint: they were the worst part). The writers also seem to be afraid of subtlety, as lots of episodes end with heavy-handed "SYMBOLISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" moments. Steve Buscemi is miscast, and the girl that plays Lucy Danziger is just awful. I'm still watching only because of Chalky, but whenever he's not on the screen I'm pretty much bored.

Same for me. I mean, I can recognize quality television/writing when I see it, but it doesn't have to be so boring. So I really did want to watch season 2, but haven't found the time just yet because there's so many other shows I'd rather watch.

^ It's not quality writing, though. It's quality cinematography, set & costume design, along with some pretty good performances. The writing is what's dull and lacking in depth.

Once Upon A Time - As hard as I found it to accept the premise, the pilot in and of itself was actually put together really well. I'm actually impressed that they got the whole thing tied together so nicely and in under an hour.

EDIT: Number dropping pissed me off though after the 3rd time, though.

Also, the last scene was cheap, but it I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed Once Upon a Time. Strongest pilot of the new season, IMO.

I agree "Once Upon a Time" was better than I thought it could be, given the premise. It could potentially be interesting finding out about these characters' former lives in flashbacks.

I hope the show actually survives, though. I'm not sure it can sustain an audience.
