I was spoiled for ATS, so knew who Adam and Eve were going to be etc.

I thought it was ok, but the dialogue and acting were rather poor. I was disappointed that we saw nothing about ancient cultures making the temple, statue etc, and that smokey was released by Jacob in anger and without intention, so the whole Summoning Protection heiroglyph seems out of place.

The hyperbole of "It has ruined the entire series" is v irritating.

Actualy to me it really does explain who made the wheel. This was pre Egyptian people on the island. It make sense that Egyptians (a math/science advanced society) would see him as a god and he could easily leverage that belief with the powers he has shown us to lead them to complete his light/water wheel machine.

    Then kill them.

Makes sense that jacob would then want to create an "advisor" to quell that influence if possible. Then execute his own counter plan.

After 48 hours of letting the initial disappointment sink in, this episode isn't as terrible as I thought. I can't say I'm proud of how the Jacob/MIB backstory episode turned out, but I am not as horrified by it any more. I've come to terms with it, I suppose.

I think I'm there as well. I've watched it again and I still feel a little disappointed but I'm ok with it and just ready to see what's next. Who knows? It may seem pretty awesome when in context with the finale.

I really enjoyed it while watching it. Upon rushing to LP to see everyone else's reactions, I was a little shocked that the episode had caused such a rift. I really can't relate to the complaints over the production values. To me, the acting was good. Not great, no one stood out, but there was nothing about it that made me raise an eyebrow. Even with the young actors, but then again whenever I see young actors I never expect much out of them. I don't get the complaints about it looking like some made for cable syfy movie. They used the same locales they always have, the costuming seemed up to snuff, the few structures shown didn't seem budget either. While I never found myself impressed by the scenery, there wasn't anything that took me out of the episode either.

Well, that's not completely correct. The writers breaking the fourth wall by giving Mother the line about questions leading to more questions was indulgent. It was mildly cute when Hurley and Miles were debating time travel, slightly cringe inducing when Hurley was talking about Adam and Eve in Lighthouse, but that line is worthy of an eye roll. It didn't bury the episode though.

But I really loved how it was written. The answers were presented ambiguously and the subtext was layered and matched to many of the motifs of the show. That was how I personally hoped it would go. I really was invested in these characters we barely knew, even with as little time is left in the show. I wanted to know the stories and motivations behind the ones pulling the strings. I felt for all these characters and liked the little twists put upon a basic tragedy.

I am not so concerned over the throwaway "fifty years" line, or exactly when the writers locked down this thread of the mythology, and I don't think Jacob makes retard faces (hurr hurr).

I don't understand those complaints either. My disappointment derived from the story, not production.

Some of you are letting your emotional investment into the show transform into denial.

The attitude of the forum has flipped 180 from pre-Season 6 "Oh boy we're gonna get answers!" to now on the eve of the finale "We want to preserve the mystery, I'll be happy if they don't give us answers because it will keep the LOST community alive after the finale, if you're disappointed it's because your own fan theory got shot down," etc etc and a host of other EXCUSES FOR THE WRITERS.

I don't like denial. LOST is good when it's good and bad when it's bad, the end.
It was half serious, half joke to be honest. But I agree with goldenlyra that the obvious hate makes me sad.

I agree that this episode was a bit irritating because there were no Losties on it (except in the FB) and I am also happy to know that the rest will be about the Losties and no one else.

Nonetheless I thought this episode was important to show that there is NOT that much magic as some people read into it. It was more a confirmation for the science part.

I am not in denial btw. :-) I just like what I see and I like the answers that are actually given. maybe some should think about their denial to accept the answers that are given. And that we will not learn every single answer to every single question was obvious long ago. Darlton always said that. And good and bad concerning a TV show is probably more a matter of taste than a matter of fact.

I was completely spoiled for ATS. When they first revealed the Light, I turned to my sister and was like "This is stupid." I had been expecting them to explain how Jacob knows how to weave destiny at least, so the lack of concrete answers really bothered me initially.

But then I thought about it for a while and realized that what they gave us was actually a metaphor for humanity's search for Truth and meaning in life. It actually gives so much more explanation of what LOST is than any explicitly answered mysteries would have. The answers aren't the point. The point is the struggle for understanding in the face of unfathomable mystery. It's about being alive and not knowing why and how everybody comes to terms with that in different ways. Those differences lead to conflict and can separate us from other people. Now I'm looking forward to the next 3.5 even more eagerly. I think we're in for a really powerful statement about the redemptive power of love.

So at the end of the day, Across the Sea was much better than I expected.
