On another note, I was at a quiz night here in england, one question was "who is this person" accompanied by a picture of Alan Dale (Widmore). All my australian friends were like: "oh, thats Jim Robinson from Neighbours" (famous aussie soap opera). Even the quiz master gave the answer as "Alan Dale, or Jim Robinson from Neighbours."

    Check the picture!

OMG great! Remember when Charles said to Desmond in that bathroom in the constant: "I am not the one who hates you"

I am really looking forward to this episode!

Widmore is an asshole, but he's "our asshole".

Widmore revealed his true feelings regarding Des' in "The Variable". That ewas the moment when I started thinking he wasn't the evil bastard he had been made out to be. Now, it seems, he had a real reason for having to do all these things.

In my mind, this also sheds a new light on why Widmore wanted Ben to kill Alex in "Dead is Dead". Perhaps he understood, even then, what would transpire as a result of her being left to live on the island.

Widmore didn't give the order for Keamy to kill Alex, at least not as far as we know. That may well have been Keamy acting on his own.

I dunno, I think he just ordered her death because of his attitude to outsiders. When he was an Other, he pretty much wanted to kill everyone who wasn't one of his own. i don't see how he could have had any idea of the consequences of Alex (and Danielle) being left to live on the island.

That scene still stands as one of the reasons I can't stand him, and my feelings haven't changed. He's still an asshole to me.

Since that conversation, I have been wondering if Widmore had other motives for trying to keep Penny & Desmond apart other than class, money, etc. So most likely he has known all along how important Desmond is to The Island.
We named the dog Desmond because he was LOST before he came to live with us, and...he had been fixed, so he couldn't be Sawyer...he had hair, so he couldn't be Locke...and if we had named him Jack, he would have wanted to "go baaaaaaaack!"

My belief is that Widmore knows how important Desmond is to the island and so didn't want him getting involved with Penny because their destinies were just too far apart and he knew that Desmond would one day have to leave her and break her heart.

Just a father being protective of his daughter. I get the feeling he legitimately does love his daughter.
