We haven't had a lot of those in S5, and some people have complained that there was almost no character development. We're having tons of character moments this year, and a lot of development.

I like it. but then again I'm not looking for them to make evey ep. better, or more epic than the previous one, culminating in a finale that is better than any individual episode of the entire series.

Well one things for sure, the people in "I want answers NAH"-mode absolutely hate them despite any great storytelling potential they might have.
I find the Sideways arcs compelling and very interesting, though-- it's just another big mystery that will be solved by the end of the series. Before it gets solved, I'll damn sure enjoy seeing Charlie, Boone, and Arzt again while looking at how their lives would've been if it weren't for that old Island magic.

"the original ending started the moment Jack walked into the church and touches the casket to Jack closing his eyes as the other plane flies away. That was always JJ's ending. And they kept it." - Bad Robot rep
I'm loving it and soaking in all the character development. It was a lot of fun to watch Fox playing a father (also thought the kid playing David did a great job, way to step up to the plate!). Hell, even seeing Dogen in the AR gave him some depth and dimension.
It's just a hunch, but I have a feeling the people complaining about the AR now are going to be the ones re-watching in June, wishing they'd been just a bit more patient the first time around. For now I'm extremely glad the writers didn't just abandon character development altogether and go with a linear approach.

You're not the only one. It's another important layer to the climax of the story- each of these characters are having their own finale.

I love how character-driven these episodes have been. But what I really love is how they continue to feature heavily into the plot, even in ways that we can't really comprehend yet. To me, that's what Lost is all about.
I don't know, people see a midget, they wanna buy a blender.
Although I love the story of Lost, the reason I am devoted Lostaphile is the characters and their stories. So, no... you're not the only one.
I like the character driven episodes as much as I like the mythology and answer driven ones. But I'll enjoy whatever plot device they're using this season a lot more once I understand what it is because I do feel somewhat disconnected from the characters we're being shown.
I agree. Furthermore, I can't understand how people can be so turned off by the direction they "think" things are going???? It reminds of people I know that stopped watching early on because they thought they knew what was going to happen on the show, "They can't stay on the Island forever, and once they get off what will they do?' or "it's just Gilligans Island meets Castaway/Lord of the Flies.....it's purgatory.".......makes no sense to me to "judge" it as a failure until the last ep. has aired.

While I am ok with the AU scenes we've seen thus far, and I'm willing to wait and see what direction the Producers take with them, I'm somewhat bothered with the pacing of these episodes thus far. I get a tad nervous that the early part of the season is trying to pack all of this AU stuff in and "get it over with" so the latter part of the season will only involve flashbacks of Island history, and I'm not sure that'll look very clean and impressive in a rewatch after the show finishes, idk... :/ Hopefully, this fear won't be justified.
