Whats the point of alt reality?
Yes I know, how much their lifes would suck without "teh island!!1". But honestly, does it really need to take up that much time in a episode? Hopefully it won't be like this for the rest of the final season and get to revealing the answers to all the questions we have instead....
Have you not considered that the Alterante Reality will play a prominent role in how the show culminates?
Do you think that Darlton would waste almost half of the final season on something that was totally irrelevant to the actual final season?

If they abandon it halfway through the season or something, then you have a good question on your hands. Otherwise, be paitent. If you haven't learned to trust the writers by now, then you may want to wait for the season 6 dvd

Why yes, yes I do. Seasons 1-5 are good examples of this.
What exactly was irrelevant in seasons 1-5, and why was it irrelevant?
I have a couple of theories about the alternate reality/universe (or the "flash sideways" as it's been called by some).
My initial theory is that that the two realities may be connected in how actions taken by the characters on the island (which is a spiritual world of some sorts) have an effect on what goes on in the people in the alternate reality, which is the real physical world.
The other possibility may be that the two realities will merge somehow into one by the time the show comes to an end... but I'm thinking this is less and less likely now that we've already seen a good amount of time invested in the alternate reality so far, where all of the characters are alive!
Smocke explains it best...he says that Locke was the only one who realized that his life was probably better since crashing on the island while the rest of the survivors were so focused on what they had left behind. By showing what would have happened if 815 landed in LA, we see that things wouldn't have been better. The storylines will connect eventually...
