This is very chicken and egg. How did all the people come together so it could form Des's future so Des could get them all together? and if Charlie had died when Des originally thought he would, then the freighter would never come, right? yeah, and then Lapidus couldn't take them out so they could get off the island. so they never would have left the island. so Des changed the future? right?

I love Kate, but it pisses me off how she treats men. Kissing Jack to feel better about herself, then screwing Sawyer because she's jealous over Jack and Juliet. and then screwing Jack when she's lost Aaron. and then Sawyer and Jack switch women, Juliet and Kate. ugh. I just feel sorry for Sawyer, because I think he earnestly loves Kate. ...not that he hasn't used plenty of women himself.

Why does Naomi have a French version of Catch-22 and Des's picture? maybe Penny got a 2nd copy from the vendor and Widmore stole it or made a copy of it to give to Naomi. But Widmore would have no clue Des is on the island. Or would he? yeah, maybe he would through Eloise.

I just wanted to post this theory here, because watching these episodes over is totally making me buy in to the idea that MIB is definitely also responsible for bringing people to the island just as jacob was. If these two are playing a massive chess game with losties as their pawns it would only make sense that MIB would be allowed to bring his own pieces. I am almost positive there will be a similar episode in S6 showing MIB influencing events off the island just as jacob did. Otherwise jacob is just stacking the deck in his favor. And the man with the rope that lead Desmond on his path will be MIB.

Consider how important the Swan was to his plan. Also consider this line:

"And the first thing I noticed was the rope tied round his waist, and I looked at him and I knew, I knew, I was supposed to go with him."

One thing that confuses me about this episode is that in all of desmonds other flashes, desmond was basically irrelevant to the event happening the first time around, he had visions of stuff happening to other people htat were going to happen regardless. In this case, he has vision of something that only seems like it is going to happen because of his vision... if that makes any sense. He only asked hurley about the wire because he had a vision of hurley finding the wire, as if he already asked him, but he had no reason to ask him about it...

basically this flash doesnt follow the other ones, i can see the flash of the helicopter and all that, but not of hurley, jin and charlie.

This is in keeping with larger, similar thematic loops on the show, though, like Locke's compass and the Oceanic 815 passengers being the ultimate cause of their own crash.
