Default A Theory I Have On What The Writers Are really Up To...

OK, so I've been giving this some thought, and here's what I've come up with.

Them leaving the island was never part of the original plan. I think that they came up with that story arc to help elongate the life of the show. Unfortunately, ABC gave them an end date for the show shortly after this all went down, forcing them to get back to the island to finish the overall story sooner than expected, hence how rushed last night's episode felt.

I feel pretty sure that the end of the show as planned from the beggining relied heavily on the people that originally crashed on the island as they were in season one, which would explain them having to replicate the circumstances of the original flight. I think that from here on out, we're going to see the storyline ad they've had it in their heads all along, starting with the crash. Only this time, obviously, they've crashed a second time under different circumstances.

There it is. Sorry for any spelling/grammar mistakes, I wrote this all from my phone.

They asked for the end date. And they have specifically stated that some people were going to be rescued.

    So, no.

^^ What he said. They specifacly asked for an endate, and they only wanted two season, but ABC wanted three, so the LOST writers aren;t just trying to get money, but they might. who knows?

    Plausible.

The end-date was decided after the whole O6 story had already kicked off.

If the O6 stayed, this wouldn't have contradicted any of the on-island story as it stands...

...but how would you explain Jack's story arc? I mean, if he never left the island, suffered the consequences, etc, etc, he would never have become a "believer" as he seemingly is now and we wouldn't have learned anything about Hawking or Ben/Widmore's larger agendas. Hell, the whole flashforward plot device would have been moot.

P.S: good luck with the flame-posts.

SAWYER: Nice day for a swim.
JULIET: What are you doing here?
SAWYER: Decided to take a dip.
    [Sawyer regards Juliet's bottle
    of DHARMA-brand flavored rum.]

    SAWYER: Whatcha celebratin'?
    JULIET: I'm not celebrating.

[With a flick of her sad eyes,
    Juliet indicates behind Sawyer.
A distant plume of black smoke wafts on the horizon.]

    SAWYER: Is that our boat?
    JULIET: It was.

LT, DA is correct. How rushed it feels is a good example of "be careful what you wish for". Everyone complained about the "filler" episodes and that the show was being stretched out and how the writers were just pussy footing around, and so now we have the opposite going on. *sigh* If everyone had just trusted the writers from the get go, I wonder how different the show would have been. . .

Just think, Nikki and Paolo would have never had to die, because they would never have been created if fans didn't keep asking to know what the redshirts were up to. . .

Stranger In a Strange Land would have never been filmed if everyone didn't keep asking about Jack's tattoos. . .

The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham would have aired before 316 if everyone (myself included) didn't complain about how bland the 06 storyline was. . .

No it wasn't. The O6 started in Season 4, the end date was announced during the hiatus between the first six of Season 3 and the remainder of the season. At that point, no mention of a freighter or rescue had been made and very little about the Others or the background of the island had been revealed.

If the O6 stayed, this wouldn't have contradicted any of the on-island story as it stands...

I suspect if no one ever left the island, there would never have been Flashforwards, and something else that happened on island would trigger Jack's change of heart. The story could have been done that way rather easily, but I don't believe that was ever the plan, they knew people would be leaving the island at some point before the end of the series.

I think the idea of the off-island story was always there to show once and for all that the show is not about characters being Lost in the world, but in their lives metaphorically. They go back to their lives off-island, and learn that they have nothing worth staying for.

And look at Jacks character arc - when he left the Island, he was still very much a man of Science. Even when the Island disappeared, he refused to believe it at first. It took his life to go down the shitter, for fate to play cruel tricks on him, for him to realize that he had to go back, and on his return, he became a lot more of a man of faith.

The producers have stated the whole faith vs science thing was always going to be a HUGE part of the show, from the very beginning. It plays a role in everything from the main theme of the show to the very iconography of the show (such as a highly technological, scientific-research station being built underneath a church).

And THAT was the point of leaving the island. Always was.

Yeah, we have been asking for this kind of pace for a looooooong time. And I am freaking loving it.
