It's not to be figured out. It's a rendering to help us visualize what is essentially impossible for us to visualize. We can't perceive any dimensions outside the 3 that we exist in. If we turn the square (2-d) into 3-d, we get a cube. If we take the cube and extrapolate it further we get that thing. But we can never see beyond our three dimensions. It's like an ant trying to look up as Carl Sagan puts it.

Quite!
Also, when a 3D object casts a shadow, it appears in two dimensions. When a 4D object casts a shadow it appears in 3 dimensions.

I think they should merge the two threads!

You were a visionary, rocray...and no one listened.

A prophet is without honor in his (or her?) own land.

I always think of Star Trek when Lost comes up Star Trek is indeed fertile ground for LOST speculation, especially when it comes to mirror universes and time travel. Take the Manheim Effect from TNG: “Manheim believed there were infinite dimensions, and that if the linearity of time could be changed, then a "window" to these dimensions could be opened up.” This concept led to the “Time Squared” TNG episode where the Mobius loop was mentioned.

Further, “The Effect consisted of a moment in time looping or of people seeing a preview or repeat of the near future or near past caused by simultaneity of events otherwise taking place at different points on the time continuum. When this happened, it was possible for the participants in the events to interact with each other across the events.”

Isn’t this precisely what happened with the Locke/Alpert/Ben/Locke scene at the drug plane?

Another similarity to LOST centers around the temporal distortions caused by the open "window", or the Manheim Effect, “which was spreading through the galaxy. The window had to be closed to prevent the other dimension ripping the fabric of the galaxy.” This strikes me as the ominous “may God help us all” lamentation of Mrs. Hawking and others who recite war warnings and being on the right side. Closing the window also reminds me of Jack’s current mission. Sealing the Hatch = Closing the Window. Locke remains Jack’s counterpoint, except now after his “death” Locke is a member of the mirror universe faction--maybe a mirror matter universe for mirror matter disciples.

I agree that they were looking into the closed time like curve that was created by an event on the Island, and did interact with it.

Jack believes Desmond brought down the plane and created the CTC, and to break the loop, the H-Bomb needs to neutralize the negative output and destroy the hatch before this happens. I guess if the energy released by pushing the button late could create a CTC, I could guess that the full blast of negative energy could engulf a lot more into the CTC. We'll see, if this holds up.

Yes, the above is closing the window, hopefully after exiting the CTC.
