Van, I just want to say that you're my hero on LP forums. "The answer is, of course, that the Hatch is essential in a lot of ways to the story of LOST, but without having even seen what was inside it yet, how the f**k would you be able to predict not only its contents, but its ultimate impact upon the characters and mythology too? You couldn't, because you lacked sufficient information to predict what its actual role is. The thought that there's a button in it that needs to be pressed every 108 minutes to discharge leaking electromagnetism being pushed by some Scottish time-traveller would never EVER occur to you.
