I can see why Darlton mark this as one of the number 1 influences on Lost. I mean, they probably even took the Stand's way of storytelling and made it into a television series format. Every chapter is devoted to another character and seen from his/her perspective, and in some chapters they mess around with that structure a bit. It looks a lot like the centric-episode style Lost uses in my eyes.

Apart from that, the old lady is 108 years old, haha, and Larry Underwood obviously looks a lot like Charlie; has had one big hit, has this big party life/debts and responsibility problems. There are many, many more of these things that have things in common with Lost; for instance the pregnant woman-storyline of course.

I'm absolutely addicted to the story; it's the biggest book I've ever read, and still I wish it would be bigger.
Glad you're liking it!! It's definitely in my top 5 favorite books!!!!

Nice catch at 108 years...

And, I see Charlie as part Larry Underwood and part Eddie Dean (from Dark Tower).

They've said it a number of times. Check out the page on The Stand on the LP wiki. I Darlton recently mentioned it in their interview with Jeff Jansen at the LOST event right before the season started at the Paley Center for Media (the interview was taped, not live). Here is a link to where you can see the video (I assume the whole interview is there...I didn't check). The whole thing is worth watching--it gave me a lot of insight into what's going on and what might happen.

I haven/t read The Stand yet, and more/s my pity.
I am, however, a huge Stephen King fan. I/m in the middle of reading Hearts in Atlantis (second time through) and The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla (first time reading).

I can/t wait to get my grubby hands on this book, particularly because of it/s ties to the Dark Tower series.

I have read "the Stand" three times (the "short" 800 pages version once and the extended version twice), but as it is now more than 4 years ago when I had finished it the for last time, my memories are a little bit shaky.

Abigail being 108 years old, the name Faraday, the storytelling and many more similarities sound great.

What about
- the dog? I think the painting judge had one, who was very faithful (= Vincent)
-good versus evil (abigail - flagg = Ben - Widmore)?

As most of you are hardly halfway through the book, I will visit this thread maybe later this month in order to avoid any spoilers for you, but to discuss some more specific things...

enjoy the book, it's also one of my favourite King ones

I love "The Stand." It's one of my favorite books. It's been a while since I've read it, as well.

There are a lot of character parallels- for instance the reluctant male leader (Stu=Jack). The female who stands by him (Frannie=Kate), the faithful dog (Kojak (Glen's dog- Glen was the old man, not The Judge)=Vincent), the musician (Larry=Charlie) and so on.

I'll have to dust off my copy and read it again.

I also see Frannie as a basis for Claire--pregnant with abandoning boyfriend, troubled relationship with mom, being scared about giving birth in uncertain circumstances, finding a new (and much better) relationship in the new situation

Heh heh...yeah, I meant Nadine.

Since in the mini-series they combine the characters of Nadine and Rita, I think I combined the names and got Nina.
