Post Discuss "The Bible" (main thread)

This thread is for those of you that would like to read and discuss the Bible and its relation to Lost in addition to the other book club books. This is an optional discussion thread and is not officially a part of the book club. It is a reading that can be read in addition to the other books. This is not a debate thread, it is a discussion thread.

Why read the Bible for the Lost book club? Two reasons:
1) Lost is full of Biblical references from characters to episode titles (Jacob, Eko, The 23rd Psalm, Exodus, etc)
2) Damon Lindelof was asked at Comic-Con what is the one book we should read in regards to Lost. What was his answer? The Bible!

If you do not have a Bible, you can click on this link to read it online for free.
http://bibleresources.bible.com/
You can select specific passages, translations, verses, etc. I recommend the "New Living Translation" (NLT) or "The Message" (since both of these are popular and easy to read). Other versions such as the New King James Version (NKJV) and the New American Standard Bible (NASB) are fine but may be more traditional and harder to read.

Click here to read specific chapters of the Bible from the New Living Translation (NLT).

Please give your suggestions about what verses or books of the Bible we should read and discuss.
I would love for everyone to participate. Whether you're a Christian or not, everyone can discuss the Bible.

NOTE:
This thread is for optional discussion about the Bible and it's relation to Lost. If you do not want to participate then you aren't required to. This thread is only for discussion, not for debate. Please do not try and instigate a debate.

Well, for starters, there are lots of Biblical names. Adam and Eve, etc.

And Jacob, Daniel, Rachel, John, and others I'm probably forgetting.

Don't you think discussing Bible names is a bit pointless? I mean, they're all listed on Lostpedia. I think it would be more productive to read parts of the Bible and discover similarities that aren't so clear (and already written on Lostpedia).

If you have a suggestion for reading, I'd love to hear it. Right now I'm searching for the best books/verses of the Bible that we can read.

And about the names...like Leprechaun Sam said we were just trying to get a discussion started.

It's been a while since I've read the Bible, so at the moment, I have no suggestions. To narrow down the choices, would you like to start in the New or Old Testament?

I think that picking a certain part of the bible would be narrowing down too much. I'm happy to go through and pick out parallels.

Maybe Ben never being able to return to the island is somehow similar to Moses never being able to enter the promised land?
