The Dharma Initiative Theory.

It basically uses the principals of Dharma, Buddhism, Eightfold Path, and Peace. I know it sounds a bit corny, but you will probably like it.

I will start with explaining the presence of animals on the island.

The Dharma(Peace) Initiative was a group that worked to promote and achieve peace. They did this in various ways and to various things. The various ways they did it included parapsychology and psychology. The animals tested on were naturally territorial or untabable, polar bears, boars, stallions. The testings went well, that is, until the incident.

A disgruntled volunteer in the Human Perfection Department ruined the entire proceedings, and thus let loose all of the animals across the island. The boar and the polar bears remianed hostile, the stallion was peaced. Regardless of what happened, the scientists needed something to eliminate imperfections. They created smokey, using nanotech.

The thing wrong with nanotech is this. Let's say it was programmed to suck up an oil spill, it would suck up all of the carbon-based things in the genreal area. But, if it malfunctioned, it would destroy the whole world. That is what happened to the smoke monster, a product of nanontech and parapsychology research, designed to eliminate unpeaceful or imperfect things. I know what yoiu are thinking, why then, hasn't it killed everything on the island?

For one, it wouldn't go around killing all of the rats and flies, and stuff, it would kill big things. It only kills humans that it sees no hope for(after scanning their mind and memories). That is why it hasn't killed everyone yet. It sees hope for their family disputes.

Cultural References and the Numbers.

The Dharma Intiative, Dharma meaning peace, is literally trying to begin peace. The numbers are derived from certain things, such as the Four Noble Truths, the EIghtfold path, and the rest of the numbers come from those. The Ba-Gua is derived from the religion. At comiccon they said the monster is not nanotech.

The goal was likely not to achieve peace, but rather balance against the valenzetti equation. Yin Yang, that sort of thing. Of course, it was balance through science.

I do realize what has been said about nanotech, but it seems that is the only way to fill in the holes of that theory.

I think cerebrus works along the same lines as the nanotech, but isn't specifically linked...maybe the creators of Lost are trying to throw us off of the scent!

And I think cerebus is a representative of the hive mind. I've never much cared for the nanotech theory -- too easy.
