The writers for LOST are very, very good. All artists have influences. I wonder if anyone else is picking up on the influences I've been noticing...
George Alec Effinger short story "World War II" in the collection "Mixed Feelings", several plot elements Dan Simmons "Hyperion" novel, character development through flashbacks for a large diverse group And I've been looking all over the web for a movie that LOST reminds me. I saw it on middle of the night tv in the mid to late 80's, when that time was filled with b movies from the 70's instead of infomercials. The plot was that these people arrive on an island in a small plane thinking they've won a trip to a fantasy island type resort. They soon realize they are trapped/stranded, and each time they have any hope it turns hellishly hopeless, to be replaced by hope anew, which in turn becomes hopeless. Eventually they reallize through flashbacks and talking together, that they are all dead and this is the afterlife. Don't suppose you know the name of that flick? |

How about Wizard of Oz.
Oz was a hidden island in the Pacific Ocean. Henry Gale was the name of Dorothy's Uncle. The Wizard got to Oz via a balloon. Dorothy crash lands in Oz (via a House riding on a Tornado, but still similar enough to merit mentioning) There is a strong theme of what is Good and what is Evil (Good witches, Wicked witches, etc.) The Winged Monkey attacks are similar to when the Others take people (they pick and choose their targets, won't touch Dorothy because she's been marked by the Good witch, etc.) |

OMG they better not be in the afterlife! What a stupid ending that would make.

Oh I don't think it's the afterlife. Or Dallas. But I do wonder if they're pulling a Next Men/Matrix thing.

WARNING SPOILERS! I love it as well, but there are many similarities. The engineer dude was set in a cave, and doesn't remember how he got there. He was placed there by someone else. (Jack was placed and we are not alerted how he got there) There is a conversation by telegraph that leads the survivors to a certain place (The computer situation with Michael and Walt) They build two rafts. (Obvious connection) I will think of more later.

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but where did you get Oz being an island in the Pacific? I don't remember that. www.silvertooth.org |
