Who is the 'Man in Charge' on Lost?

Let me start out by saying that I have watched the whole series of LOST (up to the point that has been televised, of course). I am starting to rewatch the series just to see if I can pick up on anything new that I may've missed on my first go-around with the show.

In the season 2 episode "Two for the Road" (ep.20), Henry (aka ben linus) keeps talking about the 'man in charge' and that he is an unforgiving person who will kill him because he failed his mission.

Who exactly is this 'Man in Charge'? Is it Jacob or someone else?

I think he means the man who he believes to be Jacob, but is really the MiB.

He's talking about himself... and he's lying. You can always tell when Ben is lying because his lips are moving.

I think he's talking about Jacob. This is the time they first started referring to "him". Ben didn't even know at that time that there was an MIB/Smokey, did he? He hadn't met Jacob either. He just knew there was a powerful figure on the island called Jacob who communicated with him via Richard, and that there was also a scary pillar of smoke that judged people. I think he's mistaken in thinking that Jacob would kill him if his mission failed, although Jacob obviously does make some pretty touch decisions, and a lot of lives have been lost because of him, as he admits in "What They Died For".

I'd still like to know whether he ordered the Purge, and why Ben had to kill his own father. I wish they'd delved deeper into that.

I always thought he meant himself, because Ben would not be forgiving if someone else screwed up, which is why he put himself out there to be found. Is there evidence that Jacob is unforgiving? He's too stand-offish for that, in my mind. He's possibly thinking of the MiB--he saw the Smoke Monster as judgment.

Or, right, he's being Ben and just saying it to manipulate the Losties!
