lol... you're funny Boone... seriously though the Boomslang is the most docile venomous snake I've ever handled... it almost lures you to think it would be safe to just hold in your bare hands... but not worth the risk... since bites are often fatal and the venom usually takes 4-7 days to kill you. Worst thing is you die by bleeding to death as your blood stops being able to coagulate... so you begin to blled from every orifice (:eek:) like something out of a horror movie... hope that makes you feel better Boone :p

How did you treat the bite afterwards?

lol... actually I was set up on that one... sort of a right of passage among the snake handlers at the park... It actually bit me like 20 times or something (agressive little f**kers) but it is only very mild effects... bled for 10-15 minutes.. swelled up a little bit for a day or so... and gave me a splitting headache... There was no need for any proper treatment and I'm reluctant to list any snakebite treatment here as the golden rule is to treat every single snakebite symptomatically rather than treating what you expect to happen :)

It actually kept spitting venom on me... which is especially scary because that type of snake throws itself forwards when it spits:

but I had to keep doing it because they were photographing it standing with it's hood spread but leaning as far back as possible (because that's what looks best) and that required me to be that close... and we were there for over half an hour... on a side note we are in exactly the same spot that David Attenborough filmed the spitting cobra scene from "Life in cold blood" :)

but I had to keep doing it because they were photographing it standing with it's hood spread but leaning as far back as possible (because that's what looks best) and that required me to be that close... and we were there for over half an hour... on a side note we are in exactly the same spot that David Attenborough filmed the spitting cobra scene from "Life in cold blood" :)

lol... they're not so bad... pretty predictable and unlike most animals you only have to watch the mouth.

Lol... yep the reason there is no pictures of my face on that particular snakebite... is that it hurt so damn much I was nearly crying... damn painful venom in that one... and I bled like an absolute mother... afterwards for hours!

meh if it says on my gravestone that I died from the bite of something epic like a mamba or a taipan... then at least it'd sound cool (even if my death was horrific) :D

It wasn't my snake and it was a sort of 'right of passage' but yes I was bitten 'voluntarily'. It was only a mildly venomous herald snake (sometimes known as a red lipped snake) so it was not dangerous (particularly) and I would have looked significantly less of a man if I hadn't done so...

Bear in mind I was in Africa in the a**e end of nowhere at the time... where people are generally Tough with a capital T... and the rangers and guys that deal with dangerous animals are the toughest of the tough... So I did my best :o

before I symapthise... was it a big snake? or a poisonous one? if so I sympathise... if it was like being bitten by a hamster then I don't! :p

What's the point of a snake being venomous if it's not dangerous?

Prey specific venom for the most part. proteins that are toxic to what the snake preys on but don't really effect us... plus what they eat is much smaller than us so the amount of venom they deliver is much less than is needed to cause us significant harm.
For the record if you see a snake that you can't identify... assume it can kill you and keep your distance as though it could :)

^ this. Hats are tough to pull off. There's an old school hat store in Cincinnati that I go to occasionally when I'm in the city...their motto is "a hat for every head." So maybe it's just finding the right one.
