I dont really know if this is a spoiler, but it refers to the season finale so if you havnt seen it dont read on...
The impression i go was that Jacob and the other guy have been on the island for a LONG time, hence why the other guy wants to kill jacob, they cannot die naturally.
Now we saw pictures on the temple wall of the black smoke vs anubis or whatever the statue is. Jacob goes on to say he made the tapestrys in the statue. Since jacob and the other man cannot kill each other directly could it be that jacob once attempted to kill him, but rather than being dead, he became the black smoke.
That could be what the pictures on the walls are about, jacob and the other mans constant battle.
Also the loop hole seems to be about having a third party to kill either jacob or the other man. but there also seems to be an emphasis on FREE WILL. jaco says to hurley in the cab, its your decision. he also repeats this to ben before ben kills him. could it be that though not necessarily 'gods' as we know it, but that these two are somehow 'higher beings' that the rest. and perhaps that is what modern religions have seen to be God and the Devil. Locke is also referred to as 'being like moses' who was led by god to do his will.
could it be that the whole thing is an ever lasting war between these two men or 'good' and 'evil' and the only way they can fight is by influencing others, and not able to participate directly.
just a thought :P
