okay i just thought of this. We all know desmond told charlie that Charlie has to die. also, according to many interviews with Lindelof and Cuse, the Losties will deal with the repercussions of the hatch imploding and the failsafe key. So let's take a look back.

In Live Together, Die Alone, John and Desmond locked themselves in the hatch while Eko and Charlie were trying to break in from the outside. So in a way, they were all involved with the hatcgh when it finally imploded. Afterwarsds, we see all 4 of them miraculously survived.

all 4 of them had experienced something radical involving the island in the time afer the implosion. So, now, i think that the Island is holding them responsible for the Hatch goin bye-bye. if, indeed, the Island and Security System are connected, they're now goin on a revenge trip against those four. Eko has been killed by Smokey. Charlie now seems destined to die.(maybe he was destined to die in the hatch. Eko too) Locke has been told to "Clean up the mess he has made" by Boone. And Desmond is also being haunted by the island and his past. So, i Think the two possibilities are

1) The Hatch was very important for the well being of the island and the Island is holding them responsible because they were the 4 in the hatch right before the implosion. They are now all destined to die because of this. Or,

2) The Island was/has been damaged by the hatch and its experiments. It used Locke and Desmond's anger in thinking they had wasted their time to finally put an end to the hatch. When Eko and Charlie tried to Stop them, the island tried to stop Eko and Charlie, thus both of them dying.

Let me know what you think. This really seems important. I just haven't thought it out enough yet.

Thats really intuitive! I like it.
Except I dont like that Locke and Charlie and Des may have to die :(

But yeah, that makes sense that those three will be suffering the most, as payback for ruining what the island had to offer.

I like it, Meterkinci... and I agree that what Eko told Locke is key here... It's not out of the realm of possibility to assume that the Island's "security system" protects it from further harm. There is a legend going back to Greek mythology that Gaia (Mother Earth) protects herself and tries to correct the things that harm her. For example, to combat overpopulation, she creates a plague. Is it possible that the Island does the same kind of thing, only on a smaller scale?

Can't wait to see if you're right about this one.
