What English forum would be complete without a thread for the most noblest of sports . . . Football.

This is for general discussion of he sport. Who do you support ? How is your team doing ? Who are your favourite players ? Who do you want to shoot ? Who would you have in your Dream Team ?

Enjoy.

:D . GT. :D .

The classic Nottingham Forest syndrome. Punching too far above their weight. They did well and then tried to force it too much. Thats what I think anyway.

Now my team is the opposite. We do amazing for the past 3 years (for a club of our stature) and spend no money. Despite the fact we are the only team other than "The Big 4" to finish in the top 10 for 3 years in a row. I guess the £8.5 million did a bit to help.

West Brom fan here.
Well, where do I begin. Well, recent history is Gary Megson onwards. He did well for us but we needed to get a better manager. We ended up with Bryan Robson. We got lucky to escape the drop first season with him, but the second season was a mess. We should've sacked him in the summer. But now we're playing well, haven't lost in a while, and I'm confident we'll be promoted automatically, as long as Derby and Birmingham slip up, which with Birmingham's off the pitch mess, I'm sure one of them will!

As for Leeds, Ridsdale killed you as a club. There is plenty of animosity between Leeds and West Brom that stems from a goal scored in the 1970s, and a certain burning of a stand.... But still... Its a damn shame whats happened to a 40,000 strong big club. You should be a Sunderland at worst.

The Good Twin
02-14-2007, 09:16 PM
West Brom, although I hate to admit it, have a decent team and should easily be challenging for the Championship. As long as players like Kamara and Gera stay, I think you will be back up pretty soon.

Haha. Usually I would argue and say "we were robbed" but you truly were the better team. I am willing to admit it. Even going so far as to say you should have won by two more goals, and would, if you had a decent penalty taker. ;) .

And Freddie Ljungberg is past it - get rid of him.

Oh. My Uncle supports City. And a friend of the family has just been signed up for the youth team (he is only 8).

But why the negativity. They arent that bad although they do seem to be a team of thugs (e.g Barton and Thatcher before he left). I hope you do beat Preston though - My friend supports them.

Man Utd fan here.

Not from Manchester or anything. Just a bit of a glory hunter to be honest. See, when I first started watching footie, I wanted to support a Premiership team to me, but there weren't any that were based anywhere near me at the time. The nearest ones now are Fulham and Reading, but even they're quite some distance and they weren't in the Premiership at the time.

So I saw Utd and liked the way they play. Loving them right now, best team they've had since they won the treble. Think all the recent new signings like Evra, Heinze, Vidic, Park and Carrick are all great (although 18 mill for Carrick was a bit steep).

But I often find the most exciting thing about each season is watching the Premiership relegation battle. The only team in the bottom four without a hope of surviving this year are West Ham. I think that there is some hope of Watford or Charlton overtaking Wigan (if Watford beat Wigan midweek), but I don't see West Ham ever winning again this season to be honest. Curbishley has made things even worse; he basically slated all his players and promised big signings, then brought in a bunch of average players. 6 million for Matthew Upson? Come on, he's worth a million at the very most.

Yeah, I've gone on a bit here. I always do about footie though.

planetmaker
02-18-2007, 08:30 PM
Well I'll ignore the fact that your a red ;)
Yep, the relegation battle is more interexting than the race for the title as these are more teams in the mix for that so I agree!
I've heard taht AC has 3 games or he'll get the sack!
Incredble! However every signing he has made has a get out clause! Stupid!
They won't be mithered if they get relegated then will they?

Hello, I support Everton. Decent season this year, and I do not know how Mikel Arteta is uncapped.

I also follow Tranmere because it's cheap, I've been to all the home games this season and four away games; Oldham, Notts Forest, Swansea (Absolutely miles away!) and Crewe.

I have only been to two Everton games due to lack of money, they were Arsenal (Cup) and Blackburn (Cup). Got beat 1-0 and 4-1.

In 3x08 Flashes Before Your Eyes, what can you tell us about the "Graybridge" game in the transcript (http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Flashes_Before_Your_Eyes_transcript) for that episode?

Is the team fictional, or real? If real, was this a real game from the correct time period? etc.

Erm. Im pretty (90% anyway) sure that the team is fictional. I know all the teams from the Premiership down to the Conference North and South (yeah - sad - I know but thats what Football Manager does to ya) and "Graybridge" isnt in any of them.

Beneath those leagues, there are various feeder leagues but I am sure its not in any of them either.

But the fact it isnt in any of the top seven leagues in England (Prem to Conf. North / South) makes me think its fictional because they just wouldnt have another leagues games on television with what looked like a packed stadium in the style of a country like Argentina or Brazil. There is also what looks like a Germany flag (but reversed) in the very corner of the screen just as it cuts away. And I am sure its not a team in Germany either.

So I believe its fictional. :D .

The soccer match shown is actually footage of the Spanish Cup final 1989 between F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid. The goal-scorer is the famous Danish player, Michael Laudrup.

Did you notice that on the advertisement hoardings of the football match Desmond was watching there were ads for Apollo Candy, the Hanso Foundation, Oceanic Airlines and Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack?

Also when Desmond was walking towards Charlie when he was busking the line he sings is:

"Because maybe, you're gonna be the one who saves me".

Hey. JF. :D .

Barcelona are losing it now. Sure they have had a good few years but its all going to come crashing down around them. Out of the Champions League (probably). Eto'o will go. Ronaldinho will go. Xavi will go.

Plus teams like Sevilla, Valencia and Real just keep on improving. Especially R. Madrid with amazing signings like Marcelo, Gonzalo Higuain and Fernando Gago.

Dont get me wrong. I like Barca too but it isnt going to last. I do hope they beat, no demolish Liverpool though.

:D .I don't think they're "going downhill" just yet, the've had problems, just like any other club may have...

But we do have a tight schedule coming up... :

Feb 28th: [League Cup match] Barça visits Zaragoza with the task of turning around the 0-1 result in Leg 1

March 4th: [League match] Barça visits Sevilla, the European Supercup final once again, Barça hoping to win and increase the gap between 1st and 2nd place, a hard match, no doubt.

March 6th: [Champions League match] Barça goes to Anfield Road, again with a score to turn, and a Liverpool who is going to hold on to the score at Camp Nou [I always say that they're going for a 8-1-1 formation :p]

March 11th: [League match] The Superclasico, Barcelona Vs. Real Madrid... need I say more?

We have a very, very tough calendar ahead of us.

It`s great to see fellow countryman O`Neill taking control of a Premiership team. He was legend at Celtic. Was a good player in his day too!! With the right amount of backing Villa could be a very very strong side in a couple of seasons. He could even maybe pinch Healy off Leeds when they go down(Not a sly dig at leeds there..I like them too; purely because of Healy)!!

I haven`t played Manager at all this season. I retired myself this season as I`d won everything I wanted to win and achieved everything I wanted to achieve with football. I`m now venturing into the world of American Football and have just signed a deal with Game (for an undisclosed fee) to play Madden NFL `07. I would just like to take this oppurtunity to squash the rumours circulating that this move was not money orientated at all and that I truely want to take my legendry experience across the pond.

Another Barcelona fan here. Well, I'm from Greece, and I'm a supporter of Panathinaikos too. But I've always liked Barcelona.
That's a bit ironic, because, for those who remember in the 2002 Champions League, Panathinaikos reached the quarter-finals but lost 3-2 on aggregate to FC Barcelona.
And last year in the Champions League PAO lost 5-0 to Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Anyway, anyone agree that Barcelona shouldn't have given Ricardo Quaresma to Porto? I think he's a great player.

You know Castillo because of his appearances in this year's Champions League right? He's played very well this season. He's been with Olympiakos for many years (since he was 16 I think) but this year he decided to play well..:D He is very talented but he used more often than not, to lose his temper. But this year he has managed to stay composed.

As for the championship, Olympiakos didn't have any problem in winning it for the tenth time in the last 11 years. The championship hasn't finished yet but Olympiakos is first, 11 points ahead of Pao. And today is our classic derby, Pao vs Olympiakos, but even if we win, there's no hope for the 1st place.

Apparently Toldo actualy got into Valencia`s dressing room.

I think Valencia should be thrown out of the comp reguardless it was retaliation for something or if they actually started it. And both be banned from European Football for at least a year. Drastic I know but it would put an end to it completly. Closed door European matches is no deterrent for a big club. Money still comes through televised games and sponsership. Italian football is already tarred with violence outside of their domestic games as well and with the corruption last year as well. It has been well documented that Italian football is where English football 15/20years ago. Thats what happened to the English clubs back then so it should happen to these clubs now. I`m saying this with the "for the sake of football" trait. If it sounds like I`m being bitter towards the Italian`s or Spanish its not intended at all.

Just read this off the BBC: Carlos Marchena and David Navarro of Valencia, and Inter's Nicolas Burdisso, Ivan Cordoba and Maicon have all been charged with gross unsporting conduct.

I was really hoping Liverpool would get Valencia. Thats probably gonna be a walk in the park for Chelsea considering Valencia have two of their midfield players out injured now and the team will be weakend further now with all of the likely suspensions coming up for Valencia after the brawl the other night. But I`ll settle for PSV. We`ve beat them already and without counting my chickens before the eggs have hatched I`m feeling confident.

"We`ve won it six times" just doesnt have the same ring to "We`ve won it 5 times" though:( :D

But it almost certainly looks like an all English final which is good. Over the past few years English teams have just been getting better and better and are finally producing the goods on the European Stage. In the long run it`ll be reflected in the premiership with even more "bigger" named players wanting to come their. Although it`s also sad as it`ll most likely be at the expense of young and maturing British players. But it`ll also raise the bar for them. So kind of evens itself out a bit.

Anyone hear the rumours that Sven Goran Eriksson has been offered a job at a Premiership club:mad:

The Good Twin
03-10-2007, 09:20 AM
Hmmmm. Althugh Valencia isnt the hardest team left in the competition, I still think they are better than PSV and I dont think Liverpool will have any trouble beating them.

Valencia still pose a massive threat with players such as David Villa (one of the best strikers in the world in my opinion) but also my favourite player Joaquin and others like Vicente.

However, the suspensions could be a problem as could the total expulsion like was being discussed yesterday by UEFA officials. It will be interesting to see.

But I haven't heard the Sven rumour. Any ideas on who it is. I thought he was supposed to be going to Marseille as part of the takeover there.

Brother

I agree totally with the David Villa comment. There`s actually a thread on the LFC Forum saying we should try and get him instead of Eto(If there is even any truth in that rumour!!) which I totally agree on. He`s amazing. To begin with I was wanting Valencia to be thrown out of the comp along with Milan reguardless of who started the brawl...But there is no way they can be banned now. I would go crazy if Chelsea ended up getting a bye into the next round! I`d stop supporting football and probably take up knitting!!

I heard the Sven rumour on the BBC News 24 Channel. But its probably a load of rubbish. Seriously, who would want to hire him now?

The Good Twin
03-10-2007, 06:43 PM
I don't think Valencia will be thrown out at this late stage . . . at least I hope not. I still want Chelsea to win but I won't be too bothered if Valencia go through and all the way.

I would have Villa over Eto'o anyday. Eto'o has had his head inflated big time over the past few years but his fitness isnt the best and talk about injury prone.

But Sven is past it. Ok. He was never at it. And neither is Steve McClaren. We need a decent manager if England are ever going to win things. We must be the laughing stock of the world when it comes to football.

Brother
03-10-2007, 07:31 PM
Yeah probably too late in the comp for anyone to be thrown out. But I really think they need to be. Going back to what I said earlier. Set an example and all that.

What you say about Eto is true; Villa was the top scorer behind Eto last season. What a bargain buy for Valencia(Only £8million!!! That speaks for itself in my book plus he`s younger. I know Chelsea had a bid rejected for him last season but if Valencia do get banned per say, then all the big 4 english clubs are rumoured to be interested. Only hope the Spanish connection at Liverpool would be enough to attract him. With the new owners apparently giving a good spending budget this summer I think his price tag might not be a big worry but I`d say he`d probably end up at Utd.

Back to Sven. I wish he stayed on a bit longer to be honest. The 1-nil defeat to my wee country was brilliant!!:D And Maclaren is just as tactless!!

It was a little disjointed but they were playing a good team. And straight after crashing out of the Champions League. Morale is obviously low like their self-esteem.

They will be back to normal soon enough. :) .

I didn't see the whole match but I saw extended highlights of it. And I was glad, that after Real made it 2-3 and despite having a man less Barca made very clear chances to equalize.
Iniesta could have equalized with his shot that just went wide the post, as well as Marquez with his powerful shot from outside the area, and Ronaldiho could have scored from a very short range. And Barca were playing with a man less for 45 minutes. I think Xavi, Deco and Iniesta tried to make up for that and they contributed a lot as they worked very hard to cover the midfield.

This draw did more good to us than it did to Real cause they still are 5 points behind.
And Sevilla lost 1-0 to Taragona which means we are still first.;)

Who's for relegation in the English Premier League?

I did this predictor thing (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/predictor/default.stm)and came up with Watford, Charlton & West Ham, though I like the idea of Man City going down.... just for gloating rights with some mates :D

Personally, I'm hoping that West Ham and Charlton go down. They think they are established Premiership teams but really they suck so that would be funny. :D .

Exactly. I dont know why people are constantly going on about it. It works. Where are we ? And we are the only team (besides the top 4) to have finished inside the top 10 three years in a row. It really annoys me. And even then, we still play some decent stuff.

And now loads of other teams are copying what we do. Why ? Because they knwo it works. Wigan, Charlton, Watford, Manchester City, even Chelsea to some extent.

Shame that kind of performance and result couldn't have come against Liverpool, huh. :p .

I did that once. I had the game going for about 7 seasons and then the game broke . . . :( . I was gutted. I fell out with Football Manager for like 3 days. .

The Mexicans have some good players. I like them as a team. Especially Carlos Vela. :D .
