as GEoH noted, i'm a big electronic music fan, but not exclusively so:
at the moment, for me:
spank rock - yoyoyoyoyo: perfect fusion of laptop beatfuckery and filthy rap
sufjan stevens - illnoise: a year on, still not sick of this. the outtakes album, the avalance, is nifty too
afx - hangable autobulb eps: classic drill n bass (which is more or less drumnbass sped up a bit. aphex twin is my musical hero #1) - this NEEDED a reissue
flaherty corsano duo - last eyes: crazy skronky free jazz
boards of canada - geogaddi: better than the followup x100000
and eagerly anticipating the new arcade fire album. the best band i've ever seen live, along with kraftwerk

Right now, I'm rocking out to:
Today by Smashing Pumpkins: The perfect blend of aggressive guitars, mellow, melodic vocals and sarcastic, biting lyrics. My favourite song ever.
You by Radiohead: A really interesting mixed time signature, combined with strong, passionate vocals, melodic guitar riffs, and that one, perfect scream in the middle of the song. My second favourite song ever.
Some Velvet Morning by Primal Scream: One of THE best Electro-Rock songs ever, in my opinion. The blend between programmed sounds and actual guitars is nearly seamless. The vocals are awesome, too. Amazing how a band like this could take a song by someone such as Lee Hazlewood and just make it their own.
Storm in a Teacup by Red Hot Chili Peppers: Just a really fun song. The humourous shouting at the beginning, funky rap lyrics and an awesomely aggressive chorus just seem so perfect together. A real kickback to Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Right now, I'm rocking out to Today by Smashing Pumpkins, quite possibly my favourite song in existence.
I'm also listening to You by Radiohead. My second favourite song ever.
Let's add to this question, shall we:
What's on your iPod/mp3 player/computer playlist?
siamese dream is a classic, which changed the way that people percieved what an album within the rock idiom could achieve (along with bleach by your namesake... it's a shame that the only other album i rate by nirvana is in utero... billy corgan is a mad genius, an alvar hanso of the music world)

(after seeing yer edit)
i CANNOT RECOMMEND other lee hazlewood stuff enough (some velvet morning is a cover of a track of his)...
RHCP dropped the ball after blood sugar sex magik imo - their later stuff is utterly meh imo

cassetteboy - fly me to new york (http://www.notam02.no/nood/booties/cassetteboy_fly_me_to_new_york.mp3)
the track that got me into cassetteboy
a simply astonishing exposition of cut and splice artistry
this was made without software; tapes, sellotape, and a two-deck ghettoblaster were the sources... which makes it even more astonishing and provocative.

I'm into Metal mainly, but Industrial, aggrotech and progressive also make my world rock:
Aggro: Psyclon Nine
Progressive: Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree
Industrial: The Azoic. KMFDM, Android Lust, Velvet Acid Christ, Luxt, Combichrist, Atrax Morgue
Power metal: Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards
Death Metal: Necrophagia, Cannibal Corpse, Anorexia Nervosa.
Black Metal: Graveworm, Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Astarte, Satyricon.
Doom Metal: Sunn O))), Shape of Despair, Katatonia, My Dying Bride.
Progressive Metal: Machinae Supremacy.
Classic heavy metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden.
Others I love:
Mindless Self Indulgence
The Butthole Surfers
They Might Be Giants
Switchblade Symphony
I just love music... what can I say?

The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Madvillain - Madvillainy
both marvellous albums. amputechture is a lot more purposeful than the somewhat directionless frances the mute.
i'm a big fan of sunn o))) as well... it's almost like ambient metal.

Yeah. Siamese Dream is most likely one of my very favourite albums, along with Bleach (and Incesticide, which my namesake is on [Track 13]). Nevermind and In Utero are awesome as well, but so many people see Nevermind as overrated. The best Nirvana album, however, has to be MTV Unplugged In New York.
I like a lot of Smashing Pumpkins' earlier music, like from their first two albums, and some tracks on Mellon Collie.
I agree with you that Radiohead's recent musical directions haven't been the best, but I have yet to listen to or review The Eraser.
(after you seeing my edit)
Lee Hazlewood...Is just awesome. He's a bloody genius when it comes to music. Not as widely recognized or known, but if Billy Corgan is the Alvar Hanso of the music world, Lee Hazlewood is Magnus Hanso (without the slaves thing).
Storm In A Teacup is a bit of a throwback to Blood Sugar Sex Magik. A rare taste of what was in the washed out RHCP of today, and Dani California is quite overrated.
Cassetteboy...I'll have to take a listen sometime.

i am 28; and it's a testament to the fact that the pixies changed everything that people who are twelve years younger than this editor continue to find merit in what they did.
the pixies are a very, very important band as regards the evolution of music.
and that's beside the fact they rock my fucking socks off.
Aero Zeppelin

Ditto.
I'm 18, and if it weren't for Surfer Rosa, I probably would not like modern rock. Because without Pixies, there would be no Nirvana, and Grunge wouldn't have become popular, and etc. Their influence is everywhere, and it's evident.

16??? you are listening to music as old as you are! My first guess would be for you to be in your 30s (a really cool 30-year-old, though) Well now I must ask what you think about the new wave of alternative rock, the groups the Pixies influenced and are in the charts right now. That's interesting, knowing your appreciation.

i listen to coast to coast Am with george norrey, i can stand music that was made within the last 5 years. Its all very stupid and about glamour ans crap.
i say: death to pop, R&B (the new stuff, that's not really rhythm and blues), rap, and anthing else that uses a drum machine.

if by 'classic', you mean 'the most overrated album of the last five years', than i agree completely.
i hate the way the nme builds bands up just to knock them down. this time next year, that magazine will have forgotten them. it happened to the white stripes, the ordinary boys, babyshambles, and it will happen to them.

Holy stolen identities! Back when I was forming a company we tried several names and googled them to see if they were taken, most of the names we liked were already taken by bands from Sacramento. Hope there is not a band called God Emperor Of Hell, or I'll have to open a can of whoopass. At least I know it won't be a crappy emo band.

the man just goes from strength to strength. his last album has his son on turntables, marc ribot (one of my favourite guitarists), vocals recorded in a toilet (because he liked the acoustics), and the bassist from primus. at 60-odd, he's still making cutting-edge music that pushes the boundaries.

I am not going to say it is the soundtrack of my life . . . but it has great significance in my life. . . .
You know when some idiot starts whistling some stupid song . . .and it gets stuck in your head . . . . something like . . . "don't worry . . be happy" . . . . and you spend DAYS with it just drumming away until you have to drink so much vodka that the throbbing of your hangover finally takes it away . . . ?
Well . . . this song is my . . . and has been my default . . . "GET THAT DAMN SONG OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!" . . . song :D

Yeah, I'm withya SWANiACHi!... Cut Chemist is one of the all-time all-stars. I still think he'll come back to J5 - how could he not? On the other hand, Nu-Mark is no slouch... when I went back to doublecheck on the album listings, many of the classics I thought were CC's tracks were actually NM's. I highly recommend Nu-Mark's solo mixtape album, Hands On. I've been listening to it non-stop since I picked it up a few months ago.
Sadly, that Dave Matthews thingie was goddawful. Worst thing on the album, and they make it a single. Sigh.

I am guessing that you have in fact seen the DVD that came with Power in Numbers...the two scenes with Cut Chemist making beats with random crap is the best. I hope he comes back, NuMark is good but they are crazy together.
"Come Back To Bed" -John Mayer :)
LOVE me some John Mayer, girl. Mayer for Mayor!!!! "Your body is a Wonderland" is my fave.
"Dashboard" --- Modest Mouse
I get my stuff off Yahoo My Station. It acts like a radio station and plays stuff at random and asks me to rate it. Based on my ratings, it figures out what music I will like and then plays it for me. I rate what I love and hate, and then it finds more stuff. I was really surprised about how well it works...After about a month it figured out my taste and now it plays everything I love. I use it as a way to test stuff before I buy it, then when I hear something on it that I really love, I go and buy it off iTunes. Then my iPod has everything I really love too. Best system ever.
By the way, awesome thread, JF.
Oooohhh... now it's "Under the Bridge" --- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Right Where It Belongs also by Nine Inch Nails (listen to the lyrics (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nineinchnails/rightwhereitbelongs.html), it reminds me a lot of Lost)
Scocub, those lyrics are awesome! I have never heard the song before, but you're right. It could be the anthem for LOST. Good pick.
Driveshaft - You All Everybody
Were you really listening to that? Please don't tell me it's a real song...it's so annoying! ;)
"What You Are" --- Audioslave
This just popped up on My Station and I've never heard it before:
"Chemistry of a Car Crash" --- Shiny Toy Guns
It is soooo good!! Really surprised.

Awesome! It almost seems as though it was written for Lost but considering that the album was released during early '05 I would guess not.
I am not going to say it is the soundtrack of my life . . . but it has great significance in my life. . . .
You know when some idiot starts whistling some stupid song . . .and it gets stuck in your head . . . . something like . . . "don't worry . . be happy" . . . . and you spend DAYS with it just drumming away until you have to drink so much vodka that the throbbing of your hangover finally takes it away . . . ?
Well . . . this song is my . . . and has been my default . . . "GET THAT DAMN SONG OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!" . . . song :D
Enjoy!

You know what this is called, right? It's called an "earworm" when you get a song stuck in your head. Drives me crazy, and I always play it over and over at 3 am when I cant sleep.

Ooooh, thanks for these...I love that song and it will be nice to hear a new twist on it. If you know how to look up some cover songs, you should see if you can find me a good cover of the Cure's "I Will Always Love You." The other day at work some teenage girl was humming it in the elevator and I laughed and told her that was my favorite song when I was about her age, and then I said "I loved The Cure back then." She says "Who??" I could not believe she had never heard of the Cure before!! Anyway, she told the name of who did the cover but now I can't remember it. And when I tried to find songs with that title, I just got the crap by Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton.

My husband has seen them many times and was shocked that it was so terrible. I chalk it up to a bad day, but that's the home town show! That's the one you want to play more than any other show (at least in my experience.) The Mars Volta sucked really hard that day too, it's like they didn't even TRY.

The Clash has always edged out the Sex Pistols (not that they're not both great) just because of the awesomeness of their lyrics, and the rocksteady-inspired beats.
"Know Your Rights" is one of my favourites, from Combat Rock.
"These are your rights! All three of them!!!"
I can almost feel the vitriol in this song spitting through my speakers. "You have the right to Free Speach... As long as you're not Dumb Enough to Actually Try It!!!"

Those words ring so true. I once got arrested for holding up an anti-Bush sign in a "non free speech zone." Those words pretty much rang in my head that day.

"Keep on Rockin' in the Free World", Pyrefly! What a great story!
(note: this is also an awesome Neil Young song...)

Was that a Neil Young reference I read? Nice, Neil Young rocks!
Anybody out there like My Morning Jacket? Very cool band - the lead singer, Jim James, has a sweet voice. The only way I can really describe them is that they're sort of like Radiohead mixed with Southern rock, i.e. The Allman Brothers .

I'm not listening to anything right now, but in my CD player in the car today is In Absentia by Porcupine Tree. Yesterday it was Blast Tyrant by Clutch.
And my iPod (which I can't use in the car, grumble) is full of a wide variety, most of which nobody's ever heard of. =0)
Lael - The Tori Amos cover of "Love Song" is quite beautiful. It has that signature Tori sound which some people don't like, but I think it's awesome. Also I thought 311's version was okay I guess, but I'm not a 311 fan beyond a couple songs.
Cheers

My favourite group too!!!
You are one awesome lady IMO!! I've been listening to NIN since Pretty Hate Machine. There is not one song I can think of that I don't like.
So Freckles, what's your favorite NIN song? Mine is "Into the Void" but I also like the version of "The Becoming" from the Still EP. Its real stripped down with just an acoustic guitar, piano and drums. I also like to play "Piggy" on my bass.
Can't wait until the new concert DVD comes out at the end of Feb.

Mahgeetah is a cool song... I'd like to hear more of their stuff.
As for Neil Young, what's not to love? "Well, it wasn't supposed to go down that way..." :D

NIN... I love them. My favorite is still Metallica, but NIN comes in close for that honor.
Sorry pyrefly, I forgot to give you props for the NIN love. If it wasn't for Nine Inch Nails bands like Linkin Park, Korn, and Marilyn Manson would never have had the type of success they've had.

I love Metallica, mostly when they were thrash, but the 90's Metallica was great too.
I disappear is one of their best.

I beg to differ, Aidz, IMO, I Disappear wasn't one of their best songs..

Definitely not, though it was a good song, not the best by any means.

Favourite NIN song? I could no sooner pick a favourite star in the heavens...
However, there are some songs I don't like. I am very disappointed in With Teeth, especially "Only" I think that song is a piece. I actually turn the station when it comes on. Sad, sad stuff.
I do really love Pretty Hate Machine. If I could listen to one album for the rest of my life, this is it (Maybe 40 oz to Freedom, but probably PHM)
I've seen them 3 times, every time was amazing!!

Yeah, it's not my favourite PE either, but Flava Flav's rockin' rhythmic chorus just gets lodged in my cranium and won't let go...
Favourite? "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos", or maybe "Give It Up"... so hard to choose that. "Fight the Power" is such a classic. I loved it when they used it in that Boondocks episode!

For (cheezy but wonderful) 80's classics, I also love Obsession by Animotion and Automatic by the Pointer Sisters.
Especially Automatic. :D :D :D
(And not just because it was in GTA:VC... my parents used to play it all the time when I was a kid...)
