Angelo's book

Does anyone know what Angelo's (gabriela's father) book is that he has beside him in the hospital bed in "the hunting party"? I would like to know what it is, it doesn't look to be a bible more like a novel.

I tried to see what's written on the book with a magnifying lens, but I didn't get a lot. I guess the inscription on the cover is "St. John", but probably I'm wrong. Perhaps it's Saint John's Gospel.
