One of my favorite episodes ever. I feel like Faraday really shines in this episode. I also liked seeing Richard back in the fifties and you gotta love young Widmore and Hawking in this episode.

One of the greatest episodes in S5. My personal favorite scene is Richard's conversation with Locke. "As much as I hate to contradict myself."

Mehhh I feel this is a really overrated episode. I mean it's good, but there's a lot better ones, even just in season 5. The on-island stuff is cool, love seeing the old school Others and Widmore and Eloise. And we meet Jughead. I knew from the second I saw it, nothing good could follow.
However I wasn't too into the off-island story. It's interesting to learn some stuff about Daniel, but it was just a little boring to me. And I don't know, I love Penny, but the beginning was kind of awkward to me when she was screaming. I love that they named their son Charlie though So cute. I have a feeling Desmond and co. will be visiting the island in season 6. I don't think the writers will separate him from his family again... but they can sure be cruel sometimes.

And I liked the way Nestor Carbonell played it. Sorta like "Well, I suppose anything is possible on this damned Island...but I told you this WHEN? The FUTURE, you say? Well....okey dokie then." LOL Anyway, needless to say, I love this episode. This and Follow the Leader are where we really start getting to know Richard on a deeper level, and that is great. And this was a great episode for Daniel too....although much more interesting on re-watch since we now know what his real relationship to Eloise is...and the fact that he ends up dying at her hand later on. Desmond had a good episode too - love the way he stands up to Widmore. So much for being a coward. And speaking of Widmore, I loved the part where Richard gets pissed at him for his rash treatment of Locke - holding a gun on him. Sort gives you insight into the fact that this guy has been sort of an asshole his entire life. Although it does make me wonder how, after incidents like this one, Widmore was ever appointed 'leader'. I mean, he seems to have such knee-jerk reactions to everything in this episode. I also wonder why Widmore had "Jones" sewn onto his pocket. What's up with that? Did he just steal clothing from a dead army officer? Maybe I missed the part where this was explained.

Young Widmore: Their leader is some sodding old man!
Killer line. Nobody calls John Locke a sodding old man!

Oh, I find it very telling that Richard never liked Widmore. Richard is a very good judge of character, so that's another reason I can't see Widmore as a "Good Guy." Honestly, he's been a violent, ruthless ego-maniac since we've seen him in 1954, and he didn't seem to change at all. How can anyone not see he's one of the biggest antagonists on the show is beyond me.

^I agree that he's bad. But I'm still crazy about that character for all the reasons you suggested (lol that's really twisted). He is a ruthless ego maniac but he has this attitude and way of speaking to his enemies that makes them look like children speaking to an adult that is just incredible.

It's called "intimidation". And Widmore is an expert at it. On screen, he's done it to Desmond, he's done it to Ben, and here he does it to Locke. Most likely, he has done it to pretty much everyone who challenges him in any way. Complete jerkwad. This episode makes me wonder if Richard was, in fact, part of the reason he was banished. I also get the idea from this episode that Richard thinks Widmore is a jerk. Maybe this character flaw led to Widmore failing whatever 'test' Richard was conducting on him, and that's part of the reason why he was banished.

I'm pretty sure that Richard initiated Widmore's banishment. He pretty much showed him no respect even in the 70's, when Widmore was seemingly in a powerful position. When Widmore threw a fit over taking Ben to The Temple, Richard told him "This has nothing to do with you", and then shut him up with "Jacob wanted it done." Since I believe Widmore has been following MIB for quite some time, it's possible that Richard knew about it and it's part of his reason for disliking Widmore.
