Maybe this episode was annoying when it was first seen and interrupted the story, but on rewatch it really draws you in.
Trying to place Ben and Juliet-so this was before Ben was captured, and he already planned to use Michael. Guess he didn't like how the plan had to be changed after he was captured to include letting Michael and Walt go- but the basic idea was his. This also gives a reason for him to be in the area-to see what was happening using the Pearl and maybe he was going to try and talk to Michael directly. Then he ran into Danielle.

Yeah, I'm sort of entertained by the trashiness of this ep., but I'm also turned off by the way that Hurley, Sawyer, and Charlie are inadverently murdering Nikki and Paulo.
Also I'm not sure much of the innuendo pays off. It's not like the Mr. LaShade thing comes true (so far no one that we've viewed as a "good guy" has shockingly turned out to be evil) or the statement "things don't stay buried on this island." Overall, mixed feelings. It wouldn't stand out so much if there had been more "departure" episodes during the series, instead of going full-bore truncated in S4. |

"Look Paulo, it's a plane! Climb up there and see what's in it."
"Are you crazy? If I go up there, that thing is gonna fall."

While I hated Nikki and Paulo and was all too happy to see them buried alive, I always really enjoyed this episode. I'm a fan of the departure episodes, so seeing what two red shirts had been doing the whole time was totally entertaining to me. I loved that they'd seen so much of the island before anyone else and just didn't say anything... kind of a big f-u to the A-team. The idea that they (Jack/Kate/Sawyer et al) weren't the only ones capable of discovering stuff (but clearly the only ones who couldn't keep it to themselves) is hilarious to me. The popular kids are always the ones who make drama, while the band geeks and burnouts are doing tons of the same stuff and just not getting caught/other people involved.

While I liked this episode, I think it would have better if they had somehow made a better introduction for Paulo and Nikki, or used other actors/characters that had actually been on the island since the plane crash, even Rose and Bernard! (Although that would be really weird to see)

After re-watching this again, I always felt like this was a way for TPTB to put an end to all the complaining of the fans of the ever present red shirts with no story line. As much as I enjoyed the way they killed off Nikki and Paulo, I felt it was a big waste of valuable screen time for Lost. In the commentary, they talk about how they went back to find some usable footage of Nikki and Paulo. Then they took all the other previously seen footage and replayed it again. The whole episode was woven into all those other moments and we had a whole new episode in the process. The only problem is, I really could care less about Nikki and Paulo as characters on Lost and to me their story was filler in season 3.
One thing I really didn't pay attention to before was how much Nikki was in control of the situations between her and Paulo. She called all the shots and it took crashing on the island for him to discover this. I actually liked Paulo somewhat more than Nikki as a character because at least he acted like he really loved her. Best line...John, "Things don't stay buried on this island." Best scene....Sawyer throws the diamonds down on their bodies and says RIP as they begin to cover them up with sand and we see Nikki's eyes pop open but it is too late. |

And the moral of this story?
Live Together, Die Alone, of course. ![]() Most horrible death of a character on LOST -being buried alive and unable to do a thing about it. Terrifying to even contemplate, let alone watch. Watching Hurley and Sawyer as they finished burying them....was downright creepy. |

It was just a bad idea to put this after the shocking review of Locke's father on the island.
But I really liked it... the whole CSI aspect, eliminating the possibilities, and the surprise that they were actually alive. I do agree they went too far in having them discover the Nigerian plane and the station underneath it... it is never a good idea to de-value past characters/storylines. I also hate that they were buried alive like that, though I didn't want to see any more of them. I also don't think I like the idea of the Monster getting involved. Why would it care about Nikki/Paolo? I also liked that Charlie admitted to Sun what he did. |
