Default 2x09 What Kate Did

Lost Rewatch - What Kate Did

http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/What_Kate_Did

Ok, what I'm mostly wanting to point out from this episode is the story Eko tells John...

Quote:
EKO: Hello. I have something I think you should see. If you don't mind, I will begin at the beginning. Long before Christ the king of Judah was a man named Josiah.

LOCKE: Boy when you say beginning, you mean -- beginning.

EKO: At that time the temple where the people worshiped was in ruin. And so the people worshiped idols, false gods. And so the kingdom was in disarray. Josiah, since he was a good king, sent his secretary to the treasury and said: "We must rebuild the temple. Give all of the gold to the workers so that this will be done." But when the secretary returned, he had no gold. And when Josiah asked why this was, the secretary replied, "We found a book." Do you know this story?

LOCKE: No, I'm afraid I don't.

EKO: What the secretary had found was an ancient book -- the Book of Law. You may know it as the Old Testament. And it was with that ancient book, not with the gold, that Josiah rebuilt the temple. On the other side of the island we found a place much like this, and in this place we found a book. [Eko unwraps the book and pushes it toward Locke.] I believe what's inside there will be of great value to you.
As I listened to him I couldn't help but make desperate connections

Josiah = Jacob? Could the "false gods" that the Others worshipped in the past be the Egyptian gods? Maybe Jacob and his secretary (Mr X? Richard?) convinced the natives that their Egyptian gods were evil, and that Jacob and Mr X were the true gods? I know I'm reaching, but with all the talk of rebuilding a temple, and what with a temple being on the island... I couldn't help it

Anyway, Kate flashbacks were good, but her story on the island was a bit boring this time... I do like the end when Sawyer wakes up and is convinced they've been rescued though.

I love the story Eko tells John. Eko is a great character. The Kate story...eh...I wasn't moved at all. I'm just not a Kate fan, sorry. Besides, she is a cold blooded murderer, and should be locked away. I love seeing Sawyer wake up in the hatch though, I had forgotten until that point that he had not known anything at all about the hatch. And I love how right after we watch the missing splice from the film about how they are NOT to communicate with others from the computer, Michael has a conversation with Walt from the computer.

Definitely seems like something's up with that Eko story regarding the Old Testement, false idols and the temple.

We get to see Kate's mysterious black horse.

Jin finally gets rid of his handcuff. Cool when he smiles at Michael, showing him the cuff has been removed. Makes us realize how much Jin has changed since those first few episodes back in Season 1.

I liked the way the spliced bit of film ("all the missing" pieces as Michael puts it) represents the Lost story, all fragmented for the audience to piece back together.

And I saw redemption symbolism in the Sawyer/Kate lines: "Are we saved?" "No, Sawyer. Not yet."

Oh boy, Michael's text-messaging on the computer - we all know where this leads...

IMO, this is still one of the unsolved puzzles of the show. Who was really communicating with Michael? And how? Was it really the others? If so, how were they able to control the computer in the Swan, so that typing was only possible when Michael was there, alone? Did it have something to do with the Pearl station? Is this explained somewhere, and I just missed it?

In the commentary for this episode, I think it was Damon who suggests that Walt may be communicating with Michael without a computer. Telepathically.

Since we know that you can observe the Swan from other station/s, they could have known Michael was at the computer that way. Also, I'm guessing (correct me if I'm wrong, gang) that the "Walt" messages could have originated at the Pearl, Flame, or elsewhere, since there are computers at these and other locations.

do you think that ji yeon was conceived just before the beginning of the episode? hurleys little thumbs up can only lead to one assumption haha.

i cant stand that what kate did was all for herself...i mean im sure part of her wanted her mother to be safe, but kate really doesnt think before she acts....even the fact that she didnt go to shannons funeral is selfish...she wanted time with sawyer...and neglected her button pushing duties... maybe 4815162342 is the number of times kate has messed things up.

kates saving grace in this ep. is when she kisses jack...nice steamy jungle kiss...and wayne sure was right when he said she was beautiful, even though i cant stand her...

locke: "i think the film's pretty self explanitory".... really its anything but....it just leaves us with 100 questions!

i never really cared much for eko, but he is actually a really amazing character and is very well acted by AAA. his convo with locke is definatly one that deserves looking at, and as always terry o'quinn blows my mind.

"so, rose's husband is white...didn't see that one comin'" hahahaha i love hurley.

it is careless of michael to talk to someone on the computer...wouldnt he assume that it was the others as soon as that hello came in? or else wouldnt he think it was a possible means of being rescued and get very excited?? shout for eko and locke??

not my favourite episode.

Yeah, Kate is an incredibly selfish person (up until season 5 that is!) She even admits to a sleeping Sawyer that one of, if not the, main reason she felt she needed to kill Wayne was because she couldn't stand thinking that he would always be a part of her. In fact she even said something like "it wasn't because of the way you looked at me, or because you beat her." Despite that I find it hard to believe she did it all for herself--part of it was to help her mom too, but not the only reason.

Interesting thoughts! I've been thinking a bit about this scene after I read you post.

Actually, the connection that came to mind is a the scene from "The brig" where Richard talks to Locke:

Quote:
Cause when word got back here that there was a man with a broken spine on the plane who could suddenly walk again, well, people here began to get very excited because that, that could only happen to someone who was extremely special. But Ben doesn't want anyone to think you're special, John.
and

Quote:
Ben has been wasting our time with novelties like fertility problems. We're looking for someone to remind us that we're here for more important reasons.
So do Ben and his actions (like the research about the fertility issues) represent the "false gods"? Do Locke and the miracle that happened to him represent the book?

Has Locke been healed because Jacob/Mr.X/the island needed "a book of laws", something that would motivate the Natives, give them new faith and make them follow every order without asking?

When Richard visits Locke as a child (in "Cabin Fever") to see which things "already belong to him", one of the things Richard sets on the table is "The Book of Laws". Interesting.
