Overall, this was one of the weakest episodes in S1 but I guess that's often the case in the episode before a season finale.
Kate's flashback was somewhat interesting although it annoyed me that it was wrapped up so early in the episode and then they just strung together a few scenes on the island to fill in the rest. I guess they were hoping that the big reveal that Kate helped Sun would be big enough to end the episode but it really wasn't. It also didn't help that, after Sun makes that reveal, their conversation continues despite its lack of intrinsic value and then the end title shows up. That just fell flat for me. I may be wrong but wasn't the lunchbox that young Kate tried to shoplift in "The Incident" made out of plastic? The one they dug up was a tin lunchbox. The opening scene is interesting when you think about how Season 2 opens. Just like Desmond going through his routine in the Hatch with his face hidden from us, we see Kate doing the same thing. On a related note, are we to assume that Kate's brown hair color isn't natural? I suppose she could have been dying it back from platinum blond to her natural color but if not, you'd figure it'd change back to its natural color after all this time on the island. Speaking of Kate, I thought she looked really good when she first went to visit her mom and when she was sitting in the back of Tom's car. Kate telling Michael she was going on the raft was annoying, though it does fit in nicely with what Sawyer said about her only thinking about herself. However, I think Michael is being selfish in insisting Walt go on the raft, too. Kate is right in telling him that it's dangerous out there and that Walt should stay behind. Michael has the right idea in trying to get Losties with the necessary skills on the raft but Walt has nothing to offer (at least not anything that doesn't involve the supernatural but Michael wouldn't know much about that). It would have been really interesting to see Walt explore his full potential in S2 with his dad out of the way. Finally, while I thought the friendship and chemistry between Tom and Kate came across well through their acting, their dedication tape seemed incredibly contrite and forced. I get that it was supposed to convey Kate's nomadic behavior early on in her life and that this is a scripted show (duh) but I don't know that any kids their age would evr have a conversation quite like that. |

That hit me this time around. Walt knew what was coming up, I'm guessing.

It's just nice to see this and to see its origins so late in the series.

I'm not sure how the writers really want to portray Kate. On one hand she seems so sweet and girl-next-girlish, and men fall over themselves for her. And on the other hand, she is a cold-blooded murderer. I know they tried to portray her as "saving" her Mom, but her Mom obviously doesn't appreciate it. Kate is selfish to the point that people die for her to get her way, and then she's so "helpful" on the island...tracking, and delivering Claires baby etc... I don't know, the Kate thing confuses me. Thats probably why I don't like her.

YOUNG TOM: You always want to run away, Katie.
YOUNG KATE: Yeah, and you know why. I never quite understood what Kate was referring to here. Why does she always want to run away at this point in her life? |

I guess cuz of Wayne? I dunno if that fits with her timeline but that's what I assumed she meant.

I was definitely pro-Kate first time around. In that she's so tough and can track and hunt and climb trees and hike and so on. But, second time around, her character irritates me. Not caring what would happen to Tom as long as she escapes. and just using Sun, persuading Sun to poison her husband, so Kate could get a spot on the raft...when in all likelihood no one's coming to rescue them, so she'd be safer on the island.
And then the rest of the show Kate can't make up her mind whether she wants Jack or Sawyer, and so hurts them both. as to why Sawyer wants to go back..maybe his daughter? |

It's funny because Kate has always been my favourite character on the show (except maybe Hurley) and Jack my least favourite (except Ana-Lucia). While for most people that would be the other way around I guess.
With this rewatch I certainly understand why people would dislike Kate. She's not exactly a good person. But I still think she's fun to watch. Interesting things happen to her, she's funny, she's always where the action is, plus she's gorgeous. ![]() Jack on the other hand is trying to do the right thing most of the time, which I guess makes him a good person. But he is just horrible to watch. He's always either whining, crying, being completely irrational or being totally stressed out. So, while I see why people would bash on Kate I'd like to make a point for saying: who's the more interesting, more fun character to watch? Not who's the best person.

I don't understand one thing of this episode.
Why does Sawyer want so much to be on the raft? All the things he did to prevent Kate of taking his place. Why did it matter that much to him to be on the raft?. When Kate asked him, he said something like "because there isn't anything on this island worth staying for". But that's not good enough for doing all that work to stay on the raft. Later on the next season, Michael told him that he thinks Sawyer is on the raft because he wants to kill himself knowing that there's almost no chance for them to be rescued. But i found that pretty dumb because Michael brought Walt on the raft, so... It can't be because he loved Kate and wanted to push her away, because it was Kate or him on that raft. Or because of her daughter as someone said on a previous post, because that doesn't sound like Sawyer in my opinion. If somebody knows this, can you please tell me. It's killing me Thanks and sorry for my english :P |
