amazing episode, one of Sawyer's best
- James meeting Christian = KA-BLAM! LOST just had knocked it up a notch - the scene where Locke tells the story about his sister ... O'Quinn at his best - Christian talking about fate and destiny, tha the was made to suffer *wo-hoo* - the WHISPERS ... O! how I miss the creepy old whispers, and the scary jungle, and disturbing LOST in general

Another good episode but mostly because of Sawyer's flashback. Watching him trying to hunt a boar on the island was pretty lame although it did produce two great scenes (Locke's story and the "I Never" game). At least it wasn't as bad as him tracking down a tree frog.
I forgot how quickly the show gave us the second off-island connection after "Hearts and Minds" with Sawyer meeting Christian. Sure, it wasn't a direct Lostie-to-Lostie connection but it certainly was more poignant considering the amount of time Christian and Sawyer spent together and the topic of their conversation. Also, in this episode we have the first recognized pre-island connection by an on-island Lostie when Sawyer talks with Jack. We won't find out for sure if Sawyer made this connection until later on (I can't remember which episode) but it does seem fairly apparent that he connected the dots here. So then, both the first two pre-island connections and the first recognized pre-island connection by a Lostie involve Sawyer. Vry interesting. I'm not reading any bizarre theory into this observation but I like how it shows the significance of Sawyer's role in the show so early on. I find it interesting how Kate reacted when Sawyer said, "I've never been married" during their game. Considering what we know now from "I Do," I was surprised to see in this rewatch that she was so nonchalant about taking that drink and saying, "It didn't last vry long." I guess she didn't want to let Sawyer in so much but, after seeing how she broke down after drugging Kevin Callis, I would have expected her emotions to betray her in this scene. Again, just another observation. Finally, Lostpedia lists the following as a blooper: During the game of I Never, the amount of liquid in Sawyer's bottle of alcohol changes, being almost empty halfway through the game to being full again toward the end despite drinking from the same bottle all the way through. I don't think this is a blooper. He was taking pretty big swigs from that bottle (especially after "I nevr had a one night stand") and so I always figured he grabbed a second one after finishing the first. |

That scene with Sawyer and Jack's dad was awesome. Even though not a lot happened on the island in this episode, the flashbacks were suspenseful enough to ramp up the tension, plus they did a great job at fleshing out Sawyer's character. It was definitely one of his best flashback episodes.
I also liked little scenes like showing Michael's progress on the raft at the end, and how they did take some time to show Charlie dealing with killing someone. These little character moments were missing from parts of Season 4 and 5. Another little scene that struck me was Sayid saying that he had dreams about being on the firing squad... I had forgotten that and it reinforces when I don't like how they regressed Sayid by having him kill not one but many people in cold blood as a hitman for Ben. |

Also, he was not that coldblooded as a hitman. We know that he was motivated by revenge and rage, and we know that he came back crying to Ben, possibly not for the only time. Ben tried to motivate him and told him that none of those people deserved their sympathy. Last edited by blacxthorne; 06-29-2009 at 11:57 AM.. |

i think this is my favourite episode of the rewatch so far.
i loved every single scene... charlie and sayid, charlie and claire.... i have been exhibiting total kate hate throughout this entire rewatch...this episode i thought kate was adorable. i loved when her and sawyer played "i never".....and her reactions to sawyer with the baby boar, and when she was watching him face the boar in the end.... sawyer and christian in the bar was an amazing scene....made me feel more sympathy towards christian...so far he has been portrayed in different light....this conversation was important. as always this episode gave more insight into the fact that sawyer is not what he appears to be. little james, the look on his face after realizing his mistake in shooting frank duckett..... plus seeing a shirtless sawyer running down the beach after that boar...that scene in itself makes this episode worth watching.

I like Locke's last comment in the his story- how the dog seemed to help his foster mother feel less guilty about the accident- it "let her off the hook". Then, perhaps the boar helped Sawyer let his guilt and desire for revenge go a little as he looks it in the eye and decides not to kill it.
Locke's behavior here is a little suspicious though again- he just happens to find Kate and Sawyer's trail in the middle of now where, then he seems to understand exactly what's up with Sawyer and what the boar represents. He really confuses me though, because here I think he is encouraging Sawyer to let his desire for revenge go, and then later he is responsible for using Sawyer's anger to get him to kill Cooper. I just can't help but think that Locke being pushed by two forces-sometimes he seems wise and kind, and sometimes he seems driven and callous. Then sometimes he seems to revert to himself- and can just be pathetic. ( Before the Locke folk throw things, I think pre-Mysterious Influence Locke has good intentions, even if he can't carry them out.)

A bit of a different episode this one, not so much a narrative to the episode, Saywer chasing a Boar about the Jungle, but the writers seemed to make it work with some good plotlines. I like the way Sayid said to Sawyer at the start "I thought the Boar had vacated the area", clearly telling us the viewer, and probably the Losties if they'd thought about it well enough that Locke and Boone wern't searching for Boars. Loved the "I never" game with Kate and Sawyer, just opened up so many doors down the line for the writers. Loved Sawyer's face when Locke opened up his Mother speech with the words "My sister died when I was young, fell on the Monkey Bars, broke her neck". Best part of the episode for me was when Christian was hammered in the bar with Sawyer, talking him into killing the man he was chasing. First time we here the line "That's why the Red Sox will never win the series", which coincidentally helped me get a local quiz question right last week. It's excellent when Lost ties in with general life...
Note: Quick little side note that I forgot to add, this episode of course shows us the Sawyer watching his Father kill his Mother and himself scene. Now I'm sure you will have saw the video on Youtube posted by somebody who has in my opinion had an excellent stab that Sawyer's life is in one big loop, and it is indeed Sawyer who is killing his Mother. It wouldn't make a lot of sense for him to do that right now as we stand at the end of Season 5, but who knows what's going to happen in Season 6, I think I'm one of the few who think something like that would be kinda cool. Just when Duckett whispered the words "It'll come back around" made me think straight to the video and gave it a bit more credence, but we shall see. If anyone hasn't seen the video, type in "Saywer Cons Himself" on Youtube, should come straight up, worth a look during this hiatus! Last edited by Jack Shephard's twin; 06-30-2009 at 05:38 PM.. You mean that Sawyer is his own father?
