why did walt want to get off the island so bad here all of a sudden? why was he so scared of opening the hatch? did he see far enough into the future to see the hatch blow up?

Ah, thus begins Michael's quest to get himself and Walt off the island at any cost.
Not too many revelations in this episode but here's a few bits & pieces I found interesting:

in this episode, while walt is reading about australlian birds, he says "shouldn't we be learning about birds from egypt"
thought that was interesting...

another brilliant season 1 classic
- Michael is only half jerk / half caring father (as compared to later seasons, where he's half jerk / half annoying father) ... he makes himself to be the mean guy to make Brian look good for Walt - we get an amazing one-man-show of Charlie trying not to read Claire's diary (amazing how much time they spent on such tiny, relatively unimportand scenes ... and how much these scenes added to the greatness of LOST) - Charlie gets punched and talks facts with Sawyer "You hit like a ponce!!" - creepy Walt kills birds - the idea for the raft is born - Locke once again owns everyone the Black Rock dream ("I had that weird dream again, the one with the black rock I can't get away from. I try to leave it but it won't let me.") reminded me of some children's book series I used to read when I was like 8 or something. the first one was basically a translation of Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" (exactly, the man behind the curtain), but this series had sequels of its own: in one of them, the history of the wonderland is explained: once upon the time, a great wizard created a wonderful "island in the desert" - his magic wonderland - because he was tired of mankind and its flaws. it was basically paradise. in order to keep people out, he placed black rocks in the desert around the borders ... everyone who made the mistake of coming near them couldn't get away from them ever again ... they were like magic magnets

What really struck me in this episode was how frightened Brian was of Walt. Seems like he must have gone straight from Susan's death bed to NY and to Michael to get him to take Walt away. Brian says she had only died yesterday. Then, he wasn't back at the house in Australia when Michael went to get Walt-not even to say goodbye.
I got the impression he thought Walt had somehow caused Susan's death and didn't want to be next. I think the writers want us to think that possibly Walt could be unintentionally making things happen around him-and that he could have been responsible, showing how she started to get sick just as he was annoyed at being ignored, and how suddenly and quickly she died. Sorry if this all came up the first time through, but it just seemed like clear to me that they were setting Walt up to be one of those dangerous children who really become a menace when they realize their power.
