  3. Rousseau states pointedly, “Your people, the ones you're determined to return to... Watch them closely.” (probably foreshadowing Ethan's presence among them, but could also be construed as a warning to watch out for the Smokey/nemesis possession sickness that her husband Robert was afflicted with)
This line immediately made me think of Locke. Because let's face it, he's not acting like a "normal" person. The best example at this point being hitting Sayid over the head to prevent him from triangulating Rousseau's distress signal.

We're going to find out that the whispers were actually the Losties jumping through time, trying to warn themselves and their friends about impending danger, etc.!" Sadly, this was not the case as we learned that the Losties can interact with those they meet in the past (and future? Come to think of it, do we know if they evr jumped into the future?) I was actually disappointed that this didn't turn out to be the case; I thought it would have been such a clever and perfect way to make sense of the whispers.
Here is a direct reference to the Others and the whispers and why Danielle thinks the whispers are the Others.

From "Dead is Dead":
ROUSSEAU: Please, don't take my Alex!
BEN: Do you want your baby to live?
ROUSSEAU: Why are you taking her?!
[Alex wailing]
BEN: Be grateful you're still alive. Now you listen to me. If you try to follow me or if you ever come looking for me, I'll kill you. And if you want your child to live, every time you hear whispers, you run the other way.
[Crying softly]

I could be wrong, but didn't Danielle also say in this episode that she was on the island for two months before everyone got sick? Don't we find out in season five that Smokey "infects" the crew their first day on the island?

Exactly... and it always happens actually: as if on- and off-island were really something like a transit from a life to another.

----------

Rousseau tells Sayd about the other Losties: watch them. She means to warn him that they could "get sick" just like Robert did. But we know that "getting sick" means being turned by the black smoke.

Since it's just what happened to Locke, who already had this "deep contact" with the monster, I consider this as another clue, that Locke is acting under control of Jacob's nemesis.

So Danielle's warning is really appropriate - and Sayid doesn't know yet, for example, that just Locke was the one who hit him, and of course he doesn't know John's gonna sabotage every means to establish a contact with the outside world.

Something I don't quite get; Rousseau talks about the sickness to Sayid, and also warns Claire when she got sick that she could have the sickness. But then we find out later the sickness was really the smoke monster. So why would Rousseau be worried that Claire had the sickness when the symptoms where nowhere even close to what Rousseau experienced with her crew?

I don't have an absolute answer to this question but we know that Rousseau was pregnant when she arrived on the island and she may feel that Claire's pregnancy puts her at risk of "infection" by the smoke monster.

To me it really feels like they did plan to have some kind of sickness on the Island and later dropped the idea. In additions to Rousseau's words (which by no means point to the monster), Kelvin Inman's hazard suit, the vaccine, Sullivan and Aaron having rashes... And suddenly it's all either the monster or it's fake (in Kelvin's case)... It seems like a dropped idea, just like the Others suddenly turning out to be faking the primitive appearance--for no reason.

I used to love Danielle's character but the more I think about her, the more I realize she's a total mess.

She lived on the island for 16 years after Alex was taken. What exactly was she living for? She didn't want to leave the island. Wouldn't you rather die trying to get Alex back rather than just do nothing for 16 years and eventually die. For someone who cares so much about Alex, she could've made a bit more of an effort.

Unless she took Ben's threats seriously and was afraid he would really kill Alex if she didn't do as he said.

This was one of my favorite episodes of Season just because of meeting Danielle. Meeting the "French lady" after hearing her 16 year transmission was awesome! Makes me sad all over again that after surviving on her own for 16 years she was taken out so easily by Keamy's team.

At this point the sheer mystery of her character is great. Her team, Alex, the others - great IMHO. As a huge Danielle fan, I think while she was "crazy" from being alone all those years, most of what she has said is true. She tells Sayid "there's no such things as monsters".......hmmmm. When she brings Benry to Sayid in S2, "he will lie, lie lie", etc.

Here is the first time we hear the "whispers" - scary stuff.
Also I noticed how Locke is not playing golf with everyone else.
